The Daily Times, Leave My Body Beneath the Stairs, June 5,1998.

My Black Man

Makes me laugh, when I am down

Brushes away my frown

Respects me from the top of my braided hair to my dainty toenails painted a dazzling red glare

Does not dismiss my tears

But instead comforts me and fights my fears

Fills me up

Makes love to me until I just cannot get enough

Warms me, making sure that I never feel the cold

Loves me with not just his body, but with mind, body and soul

Stands strong in the face of a prejudice society

Fights to be the very best he can be, to be somebody

Comes home at the end of the day, to help with the homework and play

Quotes scriptures of God’s great word, silently thanking him for showing the way
